Amsterdam
While most people go to Amsterdam for the cannabis and canals, we actually went to spend the holidays with family. Priya’s uncle has been living in Amsterdam for years, and no one was able to visit him. He was beyond excited to hear that we were coming to meet the family and celebrate Christmas in his city.
Peak
We lied, cannabis and canals were on our list. We found a small little cafe and we were excited to see space cakes on the menu. As recommended by the waitress, we only ordered one. This won’t be strong enough Priya thought, but an hour later we were looking at the map and the street signs only to realize we were terribly lost and a little high. Needless to say we traded in our tour of Amsterdam for a nice relaxing afternoon sitting along the beautiful canals. I don’t know how long we sat there for, but it felt like we were giggling at tourists for hours!!!
Valley
Rohit, Priya’s younger cousin, and his friends were wanna be thugs who didn’t want to show us any Dutch culture. The only thing they took us to see was the hookah bar. Not to mention the fact that they thought they were tough not taking into consideration the fact that we are from Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Appreciation
Priya’s family was welcoming, friendly, and fed us oh so much. They took us to christmas markets to try pouffergies and introduced us to stroopwafels. They were even kind enough to make us some guyanese food to remind us of home. We really felt like family especially when we went to their neighborhood Christmas party. They invited us to eat, drink, sing songs and play dutch trivia. SInce we didn’t speak Dutch, we weren’t very good at any of it, but it was a fun time.
